Framing Solutions in Army Design Methodology

army design methodology

Historically, commanders (CDRs) and staff manage complex situations within an operational environment (OE) that continuously changes. Army design methodology (ADM) provides an approach to dealing with unfamiliar and complex problems. “ADM is a methodology for applying critical and creative thinking to understand, visualize, and describe problems and approaches to solving them” (Department of the Army [DA], 2019, p. 2-16). An example of a complex situation that needs a solution is Ellyatt’s (2022) report on Russian forces invading Ukraine to demilitarize the country. The situation is extraordinarily complex and requires unique solutions to alleviate the suffering of Ukrainian citizens and help keep their sovereignty.

Using the Army Design Methodology Process to Frame Problems

army design methodology

Commanders and staff members cannot frame a problem if a problem statement is too vague, narrow in definition, or contains presumed solutions. To avoid poorly framing a problem, a practical approach would include an open discussion by a commander and their staff using the problem framing tools and techniques. Questioning assumptions and brainstorming effectively identifies obstacles and frames the problem. This work addresses a void in the literature discussing the use of Design Methodology to understand contemporary conflict that often manifests as small wars. Much of the existing work on the topic focuses on various ways to employ the methodology and rarely present examples of successful use.

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

Inputs from disparate individuals vis-à-vis agencies are sought and deliberated upon, to ‘arrive’ at the most optimum decision outcome. More precisely, the military decision-making process relies on analyses, inputs and recommendations from various staff echelons, made under the overarching objective of assisting and lending clarity to the commander’s intent. The commander and staff normally work in a group/collective environment to plan, synchronise and control/ guide various small and large scale operations. The assumption underpinning the entire process is that inputs from all agencies/ individuals/are unbiased and attuned to ensure the meeting of command objectives in the best possible way. While such a rubric of decision-making model seems, and in most junctures, is, ‘fool-proof,’ with oversight mechanisms at every level, it is not without its underlying vulnerabilities and ‘pressure points’. The paper attempts to uncover a few such psychological pressure points and vulnerabilities which currently prevail in the decision making paradigm.

Framing Solutions in Army Design Methodology

This is a more strategic method of planning that appears to be a true form of art, coincidentally, it is known as Art of Design or Operational Art. According to the Department of the Army (2015), the planning team must assist the commander in understanding the operational variables, relevant actors, physical environment, and how each interacts with the other. Systems thinking is a key concept in which a series of interrelated components interact within the system.

army design methodology

“A decisive point is a geographic place, specific key event, critical factor, or function that, when acted upon, allows CDRs to gain a marked advantage over an adversary or contribute materially to achieving success” (JCS, 2020, p. IV-32). An example of a decisive point is Ukraine’s successful disruption of the Russian military’s logistics which caused the Russians to abandon their vehicles due to a lack of fuel supplies (Davydenko et al., 2022). The analysis used in identifying a COG with its critical requirements and vulnerabilities, which also helps determine a decisive point, indicates systems thinking. Collaboration and dialogue occur between more than two people or organizations and build a mutual understanding of the OE, resulting in a unity of effort.

“The SGM is key in the training and operations planning process, leveraging their experience and vast technical and tactical knowledge to advise the staff and the Operations Officer” (Department of the Army, 2020, p. 2-5). With an understanding of the ADM process, key concepts, and activities, the SGM can expertly facilitate framing a solution in an organization through working groups. For instance, the SGM works within working groups to develop solutions to organizational problems. SGM collaborating with the staff enables observation of their creative and critical thinking and may provide coaching when needed.

These ideas allowed the design team to look at many past operations in Afghanistan and develop better ways of executing them with a plan to sustain the progress and momentum. Depending on the size of the team, members potentially had as many as five specific categories that required in-depth research to understand the complexity of the subject matter. Tactical and policy-level decision-making in the armed forces and larger government institutions adheres to a collaborative paradigm.

Army Design Methodology: Operational Art in Combat

Framing the problem identifies obstacles impeding progress toward the commander’s desired end state. Framing activities help leaders frame a problem including reviewing the environmental frame, identifying problems and mapping out their relationships, and using a narrative and graphics to capture the problem frame (Department of the Army, 2015). The purpose of problem framing is to determine which obstacles are impeding the end state.

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

Soldiers and key leaders of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division are actively applying Operational Art and current Army Doctrine to assist in the planning of military operations. Since long before the initial invasion into Afghanistan Oct. 19, 2001, US troops have relied heavily upon the Military Decision Making Process for planning combat operations. While many people are comfortable with the status quo, change is inevitable and necessary, even more so in extended operations in a counterinsurgency environment.

Soldiers attending the Sergeants Major Academy (SGM-A) use practical exercises in a small group setting to help develop graphics and narratives depicting framing a problem to prepare for future positions as senior enlisted advisors. In addition to practical exercises, Soldiers attending the SGM-A receive instructions on ADM concepts such as operational art and systems thinking to help reinforce framing problems and framing activities. As the senior enlisted advisor within a financial management organization, the Financial Management SGM is responsible for coordinating and providing fiscal assets to commanders. A significant part of financial management operations revolves around managing budgetary resources within the OE, often involving data analytics (Department of the Army, 2014). A Financial Management SGM can facilitate framing the problem in an organization using regression models and predictive analysis when reviewing data.

Mind mapping begins with a single variable and ends after the planning team identifies all secondary variables and their relationships (Department of the Army, 2015). Also, mind mapping works well as a visual aid through symbols, lines, diagrams, and pictures representing relationships. While using the visual aid, planning teams can continue understanding the situation through more detailed meta-questioning and questioning assumptions. Lastly, the group uses four ways of seeing to understand how relevant actors view others, view themselves, and how actors view each other. Fortunately, as previously stated, the CSM, or SGM, acts on behalf of the commander at times to enable understanding among staff members and planners.

LTC Moore did not achieve the desired end state because the overall framing of the OE suffered. LTC Moore did not use a written narrative in framing steps and instead relied solely on verbal commands. While LTC Moore and his battalion inflicted hundreds of casualties on the NVA, the American forces also suffered heavy losses.

According to the Department of the Army (2020), “the SGM is key in the training and operations planning process, leveraging their experience and vast technical and tactical knowledge to advise the staff” (p. 2-5). With so much influence and knowledge, SGMs can facilitate framing the problem in organizations. Operations SGMs and Financial Management SGMs have the platform to facilitate the ADM process in organizations.

Moreover, collaboration encourages people to speak candidly, which is an asset in planning. Critical thinking identifies relevant facts, statistics, and details to understand a situation and enables timely decision-making (Department of the Army, 2015). American politicians relied heavily on critical thinking to determine how the OE may trend, although LTC Moore appeared more reactive than forward-thinking. The Army Design Methodology Educational Program of Instruction consists of one-week of graduate level academic instruction followed by two-weeks of intense strategic planning. In the first week, Duke Leadership gathered intelligence and information on Afghanistan from all available resources, to include recent experience, and brought them into the classroom.

Army Design Methodology: Operational Art in Combat

In addition to using ADM concepts, leaders also have a unique set of tools and techniques to help frame the problem. Leaders serving in the highest echelons of the United States Army solve complex problems consistently. The Army design methodology (ADM) process enables commanders and staff members to frame an operational environment (OE), recognize problems, and create solutions. The ADM process also promotes continuous assessment of the OE and reframes problems and solutions, ensuring leaders think critically and creatively. Through the ADM process, commanders and staff members can understand, visualize, and describe operations (Department of the Army, 2015).

Army Design Methodology: Framing the Operational Environment

CDRs and staff also check if the desired end state will remain the same, and if no new variables have come up for a need to formulate a new operational approach. This article offers a case study for application of design to a real world problem, the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment’s combat operations in the Tikrit and ad Dawr districts of Salah ad Din province, Iraq, from 2009 to 2010. In the process, we learned a number of lessons and developed a number of techniques that leaders can easily transfer to any situation that calls for a design solution.

Using the Army Design Methodology Process to Frame Problems

To solve ill-structured problems, Army leaders use ADM. To properly facilitate framing a problem in organizations, leaders must understand the problem framing activity, key ADM concepts, and tools and techniques. Framing is a key concept used in the ADM process that uses models of reality to understand, organize, and interpret situations to solve problems (Department of the Army, 2015). Moreover, visual models and narratives enhance framing activities by demonstrating the relationship between actor goals, culture, history, and other variables within the OE. The senior enlisted leader, sergeant major (SGM), or command sergeant major (CSM) assists the commander by assessing, leading, and directing the staff. Additionally, the CSM uses years of experience to assist staff members in the framing process by facilitating the understanding of the relationship between variables and how they have reacted in past scenarios (Department of the Army, 2022a).

Framing Solutions in Army Design Methodology

With that belief in mind, the 1st Cavalry Division Commander, Major General (MG) Harry Kinnard, ordered his 3rd Brigade, led by Colonel (COL) Tim Brown, to execute an air assault to prevent the NVA from crossing into Cambodia. LTC Moore and his staff attempted to understand the current OE by conducting a brief flyby of the area and reports from external cavalry units. The current state of the OE included an open landing zone for his entire battalion and an unknown number of enemies nearby.

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

The Department of the Army (2015) highlights that the desired end state defines the preferred conditions, relationships, political factors, or other circumstances within the OE. Moreover, the end state represents the overarching operational goal of higher levels of command and nests within critical strategic decisions. American commanders clearly articulated their desired end state to all levels of command in Vietnam. COL Brown issued the order to search and destroy the fleeing NVA forces to LTC Hal Moore (Builder et al., 1999). Staff members identify the future state of other actors to assist in framing the problem in the OE (Department of the Army, 2015). Additionally, knowing alternative end states help the commander and staff understand points of contention or support between others and their end state.

army design methodology

Using the Army Design Methodology Process to Frame Problems

According to the Department of the Army (2015), “brainstorming helps the team develop ideas and variables for further research and analysis” (p. 3-6). To properly frame the problem, leaders must identify obstacles, and brainstorming is a technique that facilitates the ADM framework. Brainstorming in an organization’s public area, such as a multi-purpose room, will promote a shared understanding amongst the staff framing the problem.

Army Design Methodology: Framing the Operational Environment

However, LTC Moore and his staff put little effort into understanding the current state of the OE before their assault on LZ X-RAY. When asked, Col. Ostlund highlighted the priorities he has laid out to best prepare The Duke Brigade for decisive action when in the Army's available pool of forces. Like other ADM activities, there is no recommended format for developing an operational approach. However, some activities that help the CDR and staff to frame solutions include reviewing the environmental and problem frames, formulating an operational approach, and documenting results (DA, 2015).

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

During practical exercises at the SGM-A, students use classroom resources to brainstorm obstacles impeding their instructor’s guidance. The overall synthesis of framing activities, key concepts, tools, techniques, the role of the senior enlisted leader, and the Ia Drang battle in Vietnam has demonstrated the importance and effectiveness of ADM through all stages of framing the OE. The lack of ADM used during the battle of Ia Drang highlights the implications of not fully understanding the OE and enemy.

Commanders cannot understand the OE without framing problems, making the ADM step an integral part of the ADM framework. To be successful in all levels of war, leaders must understand the various parts of systems and how each part is related. As a concept of ADM, “systems thinking is a process of understanding how parts of a system work and influence each other as part of a greater whole” (Department of the Army, 2015, p. 1-7). The OE is a complex system that leaders must frame to facilitate a commander’s activities. Using the example of providing security to a main supply route, leaders will use systems thinking to employ the command and control warfighting function to organize the different elements of combat power. The use of systems thinking enables leaders to integrate the elements of operational art and exercise the critical and creative thinking needed to identify obstacles under the framing the problem activity.

Many descriptions also seek to convert the methodology into a linear progression, much like traditional military planning processes. Additionally, U. S. Joint Doctrine conflates Design Methodology with the traditional operational art concept of Operational Design which hurts the ability to fully understand both important concepts. S. Marine planner present on the ground to describe the first successful use of Design Methodology in the Battles of Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. It stresses the need to employ the methodology as its originators intended; as conceptual planning meant to be an open, flowing group discussion of what is learned about the complex problem at hand. Leaders that understand framing the problem within the ADM process have an inherent responsibility to facilitate the activity in organizations. A key influencer within the Army is the Sergeant Major (SGM), who serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the commander and staff sections within an organization.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Harold Moore, the commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, initiated the framing of the OE of Ia Drang on 13 November 1965, one day before the execution of the assault. During this minimal timeframe, LTC Moore did not allow his staff to gain a clear understanding of the OE. Instead, according to Moore (1965), LTC Moore briefed his commanders and staff on the potential enemy situation and operational plan after the unit consolidated at the landing zone X-RAY (LZ X-RAY). LTC Moore should have taken every step to understand the current state of the OE before the assault. LTC Moore communicated the end state to his staff and commanders but neglected to articulate contingencies.

Using the key concepts provides a foundation for building knowledge and understanding to find solutions to any problems. The activities discussed guide formulating of operational approaches, even though there are no prescribed ways. The products documented in framing solutions are essential for developing detailed plans for CDRs and staff. Lastly, the SGM being the most experienced and knowledgeable is an excellent asset in facilitating the ADM process in his organization by providing guidance and expertise when developing the right operational approach to achieve the desired results. Ill-structured problems require the use of ADM, and framing the problem is an activity within the ADM process, which involves a unique set of activities of its own.

Graphics help stimulate understanding and organize information that shows the relationships between variables better than just through a narrative. He said, "Design is a strategic thinking construct that enables leaders to conduct the necessary Intellectual Preparation of the Battlefield in a manner that informs Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield activities." According to Britannica (2020), at the national strategic level, American leaders were concerned that communism in Vietnam would cause a domino effect and spread to neighboring countries. According to Builder et al. (1999), LTC Moore knew that enemy forces were slipping toward the border of Cambodia. Under the circumstances, he and his staff anticipated that the enemy would continue across the border and regroup for another attack. The Americans understood the relationship between the NVA and other Vietnamese citizens and wanted to prevent the rise of communism under any circumstance.

He is married to Victoria Fonseca, and they have four children, one son-in-law, and two grandchildren. He has served inevery leadership position, from Section Chief to Noncommissioned Officer Academy DeputyCommandant. He currently attends the Sergeants Major Course at the US ArmyNoncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence. On the macro scale of actors, Vietnam has a history of foreign rulers, from China's imperial rule to France's colonial rule. After World War II (WW2), Americans decided to intervene in Vietnam after the attack on a U.S.

Following the activities within the ADM process allows commanders and staff members the ability to frame an OE properly. To facilitate framing a problem in organizations, leaders must understand what framing the problem entails as an activity, including understanding key ADM concepts, and tools and techniques. Using the ADM concepts of operational art and systems thinking assists leaders with framing ill-structured problems. Brainstorming and questioning assumptions as a staff are critical problem framing tools and techniques needed to identify obstacles impeding the desired end state. Operations and Financial Management SGMs can facilitate framing the problem in organizations by brainstorming obstacles in preparation for an FTX and using data analytics to create and narrate visual models.

cruise to the north pole

Sailing beyond the Arctic Circle through the glacial Arctic Ocean means dealing with a fragile and constantly changing environment. Finding the perfect path, weaving through the naturally open channels in the ice, hugging the ice floes... Latitude 90° north and around 430 miles from the nearest landmass… Who amongst us hasn't at one time or another dreamt of one day travelling to the very end of the world? A theatre of dreams, myths and human and technological exploits, but also, and since ancient times, of tragedy, the North Pole has always fascinated and intrigued.

A guide to Arctic travel

As a result of Marchesseau's search for leads, our journey to the North Pole isn't a straight line north from Svalbard — the most direct route as the bird flies. Instead, we head northeastward from the archipelago, cutting at an angle through an area of the ice cap where satellite images show more openings. In recent decades, expedition travel companies have periodically chartered space on some of Russia's working icebreakers to take adventure-minded travelers to the top of the world. Born from a passion for exploring remote places and a wealth of knowledge about luxury expedition cruising, we are here to help you plan your perfect expedition.

En route visit to Franz Josef Land

Despite all the modern equipment on the bridge of Le Commandant Charcot, Marchesseau tells me that he and his officers still read the clouds ahead to find the best path forward through the ice. They would also look for "ice blink" — a glow on the horizon caused by the reflection of snow-topped ice on the clouds. But from my perch in the ship's elegant observation lounge, five decks above, all I can see is the white of the snow all around. The Arctic summer is characterised by relatively milder temperatures compared to the harsh winters in the region.

If reaching the North Pole is your ultimate goal, your best chances are with us! More than 5,000 travelers have attained 90° north latitude with Poseidon Expeditions aboard the icebreaker 50 Years of Victory. All 45 attempts to reach the Pole to date have been successful. Together, the visits to Svalbard and Greenland offer an ice experience different from our days weaving through the north polar ice cap. Travelling by luxury icebreaker ship from Longyearbyen is the favorite route for guests visiting the North Pole. The sea ice begins at the North of Svalbard and extends to the North Pole.

Ideal Season

Gather your friends and family for a sweet celebration on the water. Four daily cruise times are available between November 23 - January 2nd in 2024. Refurbished as part of the Norwegian Edge program in 2018, Norwegian Star shines with upgrades. The extensive enhancements include upgrades to staterooms, public spaces, restaurants, bars and lounges. Start the day at Mandara Spa, where you can revive, refresh and recharge.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered. A. Boarding for our Journey to The North Pole and holiday lights cruises take place inside the Resort Plaza Shops. Please do not go directly to the Boardwalk Marina - instead, check in and stay warm at the shops. Our team will walk you down to the Boardwalk Marina as a group once we're ready to board.

Franz Josef Land

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises. Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland. It was specifically built to pilot cargo and scientific ships to places that are extremely challenging to reach. Despite its workhorse profile, this vessel is equipped with all the features you’ll need to make the most of your North Pole expedition. It’s the world’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker used for passenger travel to the North Pole, and it’ll be your comfortable expedition ship exploring the High Arctic, capable of breaking through ice up to three meters thick.

These are truly remote areas, so it's not surprising that Arctic trips to the North Pole tend to attract seasoned travelers looking to tick off one more spot on their bucket list. The expansive region takes in northern parts of Norway and the Svalbard archipelago, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Iceland and Canada. The largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, its name meaning “pointed mountains” in German, Spitsbergen is the last piece of land before the Arctic ice floe. Aboard your ship, you will sail along the extremely spectacular coastline of this icy land.

In other words, it's the first vessel designed for the comfort of tourists that offers such trips. But even today, a ship-based trip to the North Pole is a rare occurrence — particularly in cases where paying passengers are involved. We've got 267 tours going to Arctic / North Pole, starting from just 3 days in length, and the longest tour is 96 days.

Russian icebreaker North Pole expedition ships depart from the port of Murmansk. From Murmansk, ships sail north out of Kola Bay about 1,400 miles to the North Pole. Cruises from Murmansk stop in Franz Josef Land in search of polar bears and arctic wildlife. Cruises aboard Russian ships are currently on hold, but in the past averaged 13 to 14 days. Cruises to the North Pole also operate from Svalbard, Norway, over an average of 17 days. The geographic North Pole lies only 500 miles north of Spitsbergen, the largest island in Svalbard.

You'll surely take a lot of photos, because a North Pole adventure is an experience that’s difficult to put into words. As you head north, pause in Franz Josef Land Archipelago, where cliffs with thousands of nesting seabirds present a photographer’s dream, as do the polar bears hunting on the ice. We carefully navigate the icebreaker to precisely 90 degrees north for our champagne toast of this momentous accomplishment. We ceremoniously drop the anchor on a sturdy stretch of ice and disembark onto the frozen sea. Floating over the top of the world in silence is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The ability to stand at the very top of the world lures travelers to the North Pole, which is considered by many as “terra incognita,” the unknown land.

The Arctic is an otherworldly land of boundless vistas, perpetual daylight in summer, glistening ice floes and abundant wildlife. No wonder that taking a North Pole cruise is becoming a growth industry in once rarely visited realms. All our polar trips are offered at the exact same price as the ship or tour operator, including any incentives or specials. There will never be a price difference and you won’t pay more when travelling with us. What you will get however, is unbiased advice on the best voyage for you and unparalleled access to over 1,000 polar experiences.

Please follow the safety instructions and guidelines from the expedition team and ship’s crew. The expedition team, captain, and crew are highly -trained in Arctic navigation and safety procedures. The expedition team and captain will adapt the schedule to maximize your chances of safely reaching the North Pole and offer the best possible experience. During your cruise, you will encounter various types of ice, including pack ice and icebergs.

Cruise to the North Pole on a Luxury Icebreaker

cruise to the north pole

Cruises to the North Pole aboard Russian icebreakers are currently on hold. Yes, there are North Pole expedition cruises to take you there. In fact, the North Pole has never been more accessible to travelers. Many outfitters include extras like a parka that's yours to take home. Some rent or loan rubber boots (for on-shore excursions), so you don't have to pack your own. Others, like One Ocean Expeditions, provide extras like waterproof pants, boots, binoculars, trekking pole, parka and backpack on its Canadian Arctic and Greenland expeditions.

Highlights Of A North Pole Cruise

How many are the explorers who've attempted to reach the Geographical North Pole? Credit must finally go to Jean-Louis Étienne, who in 1986 became the first person to reach the North Pole alone, on skis. Embark for a cruise to the North Pole and you too can live this extraordinary adventure.

As the Chairman’s Ambassador, Fernando hosts your cruise with his own special brand of joie de vivre. A natural raconteur who’s fluent in seven languages, his instinctive rapport and boundless enthusiasm for exploration and discovery are a delight to experience.

Early Arctic explorers, we learn, would use them to navigate the polar regions. They would look for "water sky" as they traveled north — the dark reflection of open water on the clouds in the distance. To my surprise, the ice never gets completely solid, even deep into the polar ice cap.

You may even have the chance to take a plunge into the icy water. No other point on Earth is exactly like the North Pole and there is no celebration anywhere quite like this. 50 Years of Victory’s dedicated helicopter enables North Pole visitors to soar above the vast icy landscapes and truly appreciate the magnitude of the seldom-visited North Pole. The Geographic North Pole or Terrestrial North Pole, is the point in the northern hemisphere where the earth’s axis of rotation meets its surface.

When booking for your chosen itinerary, the payment options will be quoted. This ensures you have the very best protection on your booking. During the 24 hours of daylight between April and mid-August, you will not see the Northern Lights as they are only visible during the dark hours.

North Pole cruise prices historically started at $30,000 per person, with luxury cruises starting at $57,000 per person with suites costing $58,000 up to $184,000 per person. But most guests are content to stand on the top of the world, walk on the ice and take pictures to document the momentous achievement. Massive icebergs are surrounded by a horizon that seems to go on forever. For many years the Yamal and 50 Years of Victory icebreaker were the workhorses of the North Pole cruise industry. Owned by the Russian government, they were chartered by polar expedition companies specifically for North Pole cruises.

Find a spot on the bow and settle in to watch as the ice creaks and splinters around the ship. Before you know it, an hour will have passed by, and your camera will be full of photos of the mesmerising ocean. Floating above the North Pole in a hot air balloon, tethered to the ice below, it can almost feel like you're holding up the whole world.

For some relaxation just outside of the city, visitors have the opportunity to visit the Reykjanes peninsula and its famous thermal lagoons of the Blue Lagoon. On the East coast of Greenland, in the Ittoqqortoormiit region, you will have the rare opportunity of immersing yourself in the heart of isolated scenery and exploring the beauty of its landscapes. The high alpine mountains stand out in the sky, revealing dark rock edges. The region is home to the longest fjord system in the world, Scoresby Sound.

To embark a North Pole cruise in Svalbard, travelers must fly from Olso, Norway, to Longyearbyen. They typically have one or two big waterslides (sometimes three!), a play zone with interactive water features and a large, continuously filling dump bucket that periodically soaks everybody within range. In fact, when it comes to waterslides on ships, Carnival is the cruise world's king. There's now at least one waterslide on all but one ship in the Carnival fleet (Carnival Luminosa) — something no other line can say. The top decks of Carnival vessels are covered in family-focused attractions – pools, waterslide areas and bustling fun zones with such draws as ropes courses and miniature golf.

"We want the full impact of the spot to hit during the game," Ken Jones, Carnival's vice president of corporate marketing, told Tadena. "Want to know more about the mystery spot? Well, we're not going to tell you. Because then it wouldn't be a mystery spot. The mystery. Solved soon." With the new “La Back to Funna” campaign, the unconventional singer belts out a catchy aria to remind guests all they have missed on their Carnival cruise, imploring them to “bring your flippy flops-o and prepare for lotsa splash-o." Carnival Cruise Line today revealed details for Paradise Plaza and Calypso Lagoon, two of the five portals at its new Celebration Key™ cruise... “And they need to continue to evolve their infrastructure as the ships get larger.

Maybe you'll drink a little too much, eat a little too much, play a little too much — but in the end, you'll say it was your best trip ever. Occasionally, Carnival will deploy a ship to Europe for a few weeks or months. This often takes place when a vessel needs to go to a European shipyard for an overhaul. Indeed, if you're going on a Carnival cruise, the odds are you're driving to the ship, not flying, and you're probably not paying much more than you would for a trip to a local beach town. Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way. The fun continues when you reach your port — there’s a huge variety of shore excursions to choose from. The song’s infectious beat and catchy chorus make it hard to resist dancing along. And with its positive message about having a good feeling and believing in yourself, it’s no wonder that it’s become such an iconic part of Carnival Cruise’s advertising campaigns.

Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality. All this said, we recommend checking Carnival's website before sailing for the very latest on requirements. Meanwhile, for passengers hoping for quiet time away from the kids, many Carnival ships also have an adults-only Serenity retreat area on their top decks with padded loungers, daybeds, hot tubs and often a bar. On the vast majority of Carnival ships, there's not just a single waterslide but a whole water park area. Dubbed WaterWorks, these areas vary in size and features from vessel to vessel.

Aimed squarely at Americans, its trips are all about cruising close to home at a reasonable price. Different people attempt to answer the question, "what's funderstruck on Carnival?" As the people enjoy different fun activities at the cruise-line, each person crafts their own idea of being funderstruck. Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Carnival vessels was recently priced at $21.25 per day when bought in advance ($25 per day when bought onboard). Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your credit card points when paying for the cruise by using a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases. This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit).

On most ships, smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is only allowed in designated outdoor areas and in casinos and nightclubs. On Carnival ships in Australia, smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. Carnival also offers a less expensive "social" plan that only allows access to key social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and messaging services such as WhatsApp for $15.30 a day when bought in advance. A slightly more expensive "value" plan, at $19.55 per day when bought in advance, adds access to email and most websites.

For planning itineraries, Stein said the cruise line has a very high prioritization on reducing its carbon footprint, which can be achieved by sailing shorter distances or at lower speeds.

If you're sure Carnival is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Carnival's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand. A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They can also help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage. Members earn one point for every night they sail on one of the line's ships.

On many ships there are extensive dedicated spaces for the different groups. Carnival Panorama also houses Carnival's first cooking classroom. Dubbed Carnival Kitchen, it's located near the ship's main restaurants and is a seriously tricked-out venue complete with nine state-of-the-art, marbled granite cooking stations for two and a dedicated dining area. Every Carnival ship has a casino, usually smack in the middle of the main entertainment deck.
