Though the snaps are easy to open and close, we struggled a bit with the application. A short bob style didn’t offer enough hair for the seven wefts to adhere to.

These clip-ins are remy human hair, and you can choose between 14"-22" lengths. Maybe you’ve tried real human hair extensions before, or maybe you’ve only clipped in synthetic ones. You’ve probably noticed the wiry and coarse feel of lesser quality synthetics — but we’re here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way.

Shhh, it’s a secret

"The hair is great quality; my Glam Seamless tape-ins usually last me around a year which is very impressive compared to other companies I’ve tried," one reviewer writes. "I get questions about my hair constantly and I will recommend Glam Seamless every time." "Best extensions, and I love how the product is ethically sourced and traceable," notes one reviewer. It's never been easier than with ready-to-wear ponytails, wigs & volumizing wefts. Our toppers are equipped with discreet, secure clips.

Sew-in wefts hair extensions

While the general rule with hair extensions is that you get what you pay for, you can find affordable options that are good quality. While Vario might not have the varied choices of some more expensive brands, the brand does offer high-quality, double-weft human hair. So, whip your new hair back and forth while you save some pennies.

Black extensions are available in Jet Black and Off Black. Emily Algar is an Australia-based journalist and beauty expert specializing in product reviews. Her work has been published in MyDomaine, Who What Wear, and POPSUGAR. We independently evaluate all recommended products and services.

With wigs, clips, bulk, and wefted hair options, you can find the style, shade, and texture that suits you best. If you’re not convinced, go in and touch the hair for yourself—the brand has brick-and-mortar locations across the country. Kinkistry takes the guesswork out of matching the texture of extensions to your natural curl pattern. The Black-owned brand offers weft hair wigs, clip-ins, and ponytails ranging in curl patterns from 2b to 4c. Also, they're all 100 percent virgin hair—if you take good care of them, you'll be amazed at how long it lasts.

Their mission is to sell hair that's been ethically sourced worldwide, as well as paying fair wages for their workers—so you can trust that this hair is going to a good cause. The Hair Shop is an industry favorite known for offering excellent products. Opt for the naked or skinny clip-ins if you already have thick hair but want to pump up the volume. They are super easy to install if you start with the right cut. "Anyone with thick hair should avoid starting from a blunt bob or short cut when trying to achieve a long length and avoid a choppy-looking extension," says celebrity hairstylist César Ramirez . "The best way to blend extensions is to razor-cut or thin out ends."

After wearing for a few weeks, I did wash the hair, and the texture reverted to its natural state with no issues. There is a suggestion to wash the hair prior to installing. I opted out of this option because the hair was in great condition. Please allow 4-6 weeks for pre-ordered products to complete processing. Note, this is in addition to the shipping time estimate posted by the shipping carrier.

However, “if your hair is very fine I find it helps to replace the big clips with smaller ones so they’re more gentle and tug the hair less,” says Giannetos. The set has seven pieces, which is good news if you have a bigger head and lots of hair to work with. If your head is on the smaller side or has finer hair density, you might not be able to use all of the wefts. Regardless, we were pleasantly surprised by the easy installation process and noted that the hardest part was sectioning off the hair to create even layers. Clip-in extensions are a great option if you're looking for temporary length and fullness, but securing them can be tricky and uncomfortable.

Shipping and delivery updates will be sent via email once the order has shipped. Orders are expected to arrive within 3-4 business days AFTER the shipping confirmation is received and scanned by the carrier. All Melanj Hair extensions come in the color Natural Black. Types of Permanent Hair Extensions can include Weave, Nanos, I Tips, Micro Rings and Tapes, once attached by these methods the extensions can be in for anything up to 12 weeks. Types of Temporary Hair Extensions are usually called Clip in’s which are only placed for up to 8 hour at a time, and should last you 6 months.

"This is my first time using extensions and I’m in love," one tester writes. "I’m using them to give some volume to my thinning hair. They are easy to put it and blend great with my natural hair." Plus, they can be reused up to three times or left on your head for a full four to six weeks. If you want the most natural-looking clip-ins, you gotta try these. Kinkistry’s clip-ins come in seven different textures, including 4 a/b coils, 4 b/c coils, and more. If you’re not sure which one to try, take a look at the Kurlgenics clip-ins, which resemble 3c/4a textures, and go from there.

What to Look for When Buying Clip-in Hair Extensions

After applying the clip-ins under the supervision of an expert, testers judged each one based on ease of installation, comfort, color match, overall look, and ease of removal. They continued to wear at home for several weeks to understand how to wash extensions as well. These layered extensions use a unique wire system that allows your own hair to hold them in place and deliver tons of volume. Since, unlike traditional extensions, they are not secured at the roots, they're ideal for sensitive scalps.

Best Natural Human Hair

Within the generous seven clip-in set, there are only two colors to choose from. But, on the flip side we found that although our hair was a little darker than the shade we chose, the virgin kinky curly blend of human hair looked totally natural and matched our coily texture to a T. From its natural color to the real-feel texture, the Hidden Crown extensions impressed us right from the start. Finding the perfect shade for redheads is tricky, but their “natural red” option blends in seamlessly with the rest of our auburn-hued hair. Notably, the brand designed it with 100 percent Remy human hair, making it difficult to distinguish when the real hair ends and where the clip-ins begin. Additionally, the extensions held a curl extremely well (yes, even better than our natural hair), and this detail makes it a great option for special events and long nights.

Our Spiral Curl hair extensions are loosely coiled, ringlet curls with medium luster, fine hair strands and meant to blend seamlessly with Type 3 natural hair when worn curly. While this hair CAN be blown out, straightened or heat-styled, it is not recommended as you could damage the curl pattern and shorten the lifespan of the extensions. Our clip-in extensions feature silicone coated clips for a strong hold without the risk of damaging your natural hair. Our Coil Curl hair extensions are tightly coiled, ringlet curls with low luster and meant to blend seamlessly with Type 4 natural hair when worn curly. Due to the natural texture, blow drying, heat styling and straightening is not recommended as it could potentially damage the curl pattern and shorten the lifespan of the extensions.

Conan's journey to the top of the hair extension and wig industry began with a passion for fashion and beauty, combined with a keen business sense. He pursued higher education in business administration, with a focus on entrepreneurship, which provided him with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of starting and running a successful business. After completing his studies, Conan identified a gap in the market for high-quality, ethically sourced hair products and set out to fill it. By following these tips, you can ensure that your hair extensions remain beautiful and functional for as long as possible. Proper care not only protects your investment but also ensures that your hair looks great every day.

SEE IT IN REAL LIFE

Don’t worry, we picked the best quality donors, so your curls will always bounce right back. Made for babes who love a good curl, Jolie is a deep curly texture that turns up the volume with ringlets that resemble the perfect wash and go. Silky soft and ready to be straightened or curled, the Venus Wave wefted bundles are your new styling BFF. Play up the body with curls or give Naomi Campbell-glam with a bone-straight bust-down. I've had these clip ins for 2 years and I wear them almost everyday and they still look the same way they did when I first wore them.

For thin hair, our tape-in or nano-link extensions are ideal. They're light and subtle, perfectly adding volume without being too heavy. For those with medium to very thick hair, USA Hair's sewn-in extensions, also known as wefts or weaves, are an exceptional option. These 100% Burmese bundles can be worn in their natural state or heat-styled up to 470°F.

Tested by time, perfect for your big days, little days, and everything in between. The real style action though, has been on Kardashian's Instagram as of late. She's posed in everything from bikinis while on Spring Break vacation with her sisters to Prada for thirst traps taken by her daughter North, 11.

Wefted Hair

If you want your hair extensions to remain in good quality, they’ll require some maintenance, whether they’re clip-ins or professionally installed. Marjan recommends protecting your extensions just like you would your natural hair, which includes brushing regularly and avoiding damage whenever possible, especially when styling or sleeping. Prices range from $199 to $449, depending on the length you want, and the 100 percent human Remy hair is available in 28 shades (including highlights). Plus, you can try the Daydream style, which has tapered ends that blend more seamlessly into thin and fine hair types. Everyone from Oprah to Jorja Smith has sung the praises of Indique Hair. “The hair is high-quality, natural, unprocessed human hair,” Ramirez affirms.

If the highest-quality option is what you're after, look for a brand that uses Remy hair—aka human hair that has its cuticles intact and has never been dyed or processed in any way. Ponytail extensions are a surefire way to add extra pizzaz with minimal effort, yet, they often slide down our heads throughout the day or become tangled within their velcro attachments. The Barely Extensions, however, effectively resolved these common struggles by designing the ponytail with a sturdy hidden comb and thin, comfortable velcro strips that don't become ensnared in our natural hair.

To make temporary extensions last even longer, you can get the bonds or tape moved up every six to eight weeks as your hair grows. Even still, after three or four move-ups, you’ll likely want to get a full re-install to deep-clean your scalp and make sure the bonds and tape are positioned evenly. "I’m very happy with my halo extension," one tester writes. "I have natural black hair and the jet black is a perfect match. I purchased this to wear for a wedding and it definitely helped accomplish the look I was going for." "This beautiful pony is such a perfect way to make a statement on any occasion," reads one review.

Her latest look joins a list of ensembles teasing what might be expected from Kardashian's possible appearance at next week's Met Gala and her style in the months to come. Any concerns or suggestions you have about our products are always welcomed. RESULTS MAY VARY for each individual depending upon hair length, texture and density. I purchased with this company around the holidays and my package was lost.

Prices for all of the clip-ins range from $115 to $180, come in lengths of 10 to 28 inches (!), and can be dyed or straightened at home on your own. If you’re new to extensions and don’t want to spend a fortune before you know if you’ll love them or not, try Locks & Mane. The brand's extensions are made with 100 percent human Remy hair, so you're working with top-tier real hair at relatively affordable prices (like, the top-knot extension starts at only $35). BELLAMI Clip In Hair Extensions are 100% Remy Human hair extensions.

Dark brown highlights on black hair will give a dimensional glow to your look and are a great start to test out lighter strands. Show brown highlight styles to your stylist next time you are in to start your new hair journey. A bright, cherry red hair color is certainly bold, but we can’t seem to get enough of this hue on those with dark skin tones.

When it comes to darker tones, this stunning deep brunette with subtle highlights is a must-try. If this hue is what you would like, you can avoid taking the highlights too light. It can be helpful to change this color in the salon rather than at home to ensure maximum impact and expert highlight placement. Brunettes who are transitioning to full-on gray, often have a harsh demarcation line separating their light roots and dark ends.

Plus, you could change your hair color at every appointment. To create black hair color ideas with vivids, try color-blocking peek-a-boos under your base tone. This way, the roots will be covered, minimizing the look of it growing out. Invest in Redken Color Extend Shampoo to maintain your color. You can’t go wrong with subtle purple highlights if you have jet-black hair.

Maintain Blonde and Ashy Tones With a Purple Shampoo

Blonde ombre highlights on dark hair give brunettes high-contrast blonde highlights while leaving dimension and depth. If you’d like to add pop to your silver highlights, please don’t hesitate to ask for a more violet ash hue. For an understated look, it’s good to start with small streaks or flecks throughout the hair. You can also use balayage techniques for more blended results. These hair color highlights require special maintenance and upkeep.

In addition, blonde comes in an impressive variety of shades. Sandy, peachy, strawberry, platinum, or golden highlights — this is you and your colorist who make the final decision. A reddish hue is one of the best black hair highlights, creating an eye-catching result. The finish is so strong it offers additional flair to your long, wavy hair. You’ll need these burgundy highlights to be moisturized while avoiding oils to maintain their most vibrant state.

On the other hand, unicorn highlights give all that with an extra spice of fun and adventure. It’s a great choice if you want to completely transform your look. What if you end up not liking a vibrant color block on a black pixie cut? Well, you’ll just chop it off and continue with your life.

If you choose an inverted bob haircut, make sure that the highlights are thin and not large. White highlights on black hair can be seen as an empowering symbol of self-expression and confidence. It’s a non-verbal message that says, “I am comfortable in my skin and have the confidence to defy norms and express my unique personality”. This hairstyle can be a daily reminder of one’s strength, individuality, and courage. If you enjoy shining bright and turning heads at all times, fiery red highlights might be what you need. So vivid and juicy, they are a great way to show off your charismatic personality and unique style.

This technique consists of blending your grays into your base hair color. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker have both adopted herringbone highlights into their iconic blonde shades. A black sapphire hue features just a touch of blue for a fresh, on-trend option.

Then, tone them down with a semi-permanent tone that will pick up the light nicely. Be sure to ask for a toning conditioner to keep this color vibrant. Achieving true white highlights on black hair almost always requires bleaching. Incorporate a purple shampoo into your routine to neutralize any brassy tones, keeping your white highlights crisp and bright. Peekaboo highlights are hidden beneath the top layer of hair, only visible when you move or style your hair a certain way.

This subtle look is just there but enough there for you to notice the difference. It will make your hair have more depth and style than it did before, making it a great option when you want to enhance your look without being super daring. The subtle graduation of almost black at the roots to lighter ash tones towards the ends brings a sophisticated dimension to this timeless cut. A dramatic bob cut that stands out with its ashy highlights and money pieces, creating a bold and edgy look against the dark base.

In reality, there are ample opportunities to experiment with your color if you have ultra-dark hair, especially by adding highlights on black hair. Smoky silver gray highlights lend gorgeous shine to dark strands, so if your client is seeking a look with cool undertones, recommend this glossy style. The trick is to keep the roots dark, then focus the silver highlights through the mid-lengths and ends of hair. We love this melted ombre hair take, which was crafted using demi-permanent Color Touch.

She has worked professionally in the tanning industry for years. She has been interested in esthetics since childhood, and has tried every hair, skin, and makeup product ever produced (more or less). Transitioning seamlessly from almost black to smoky grey, this ombre-style is a modern take on classic elegance. A long bob cut, or a lob, is always a good idea, especially if it comes in black color, with blonde face-frames as a cherry on the top. Reducing the use of heat styling tools and consulting with your stylist for a tailored recovery plan are also crucial steps.

What to Know Before Getting Highlights on Black Hair

Perfect for medium hair and long hair, this way you can play around with more than two shades. Highlights are a fab style way to embrace lighter look without going all the way. Your roots will grow out with time, but are easy to top up, making this a relatively low maintenance look. This look is mostly white which needs a lot of toning to stop it from drawing yellow tones and becoming brassy. Half and half hair looks best on a long bob, also known as the Lob. Keep it super sleek and straightened to show the two-tone, split dye wonder.

The balayage technique often focuses on the mid-lengths and ends, so even during the grow-out phase, your balayage should still appear natural without obvious regrowth. Foilayage with tipping out the ends will give you the highest lightening impact. While toning with a warm level 8 will give you a caramel tone to balance the dark and light together. To replicate her hair color, keep the roots dark brown or black before expertly painting subtle highlights down through the mid-lengths and ends.

Coffee Tones

However, there are easy ways to create light caramel pieces that will give your hair added dimension and brighten up your face. Caramel brown hair color is a great option if you need to brighten up your look. A carefully selected shade of caramel (or a combination of them) can go a long way toward beautifully emphasizing your facial features and making your skin glow. The hair has a dark, rich brunette base color with added caramel highlights.

It allows for various styling options such as curls, waves, or sleek straight looks. This makes it a perfect choice for those who want a stylish hairdo. Get a few layers and try this mid-length dark brown and caramel hair color. These caramel highlights on dark hair are a great option for ladies with a warm or neutral skin tone.

This color is helpful to warm up your complexion and give you a sun-kissed look. The slightly copper hue of Nicole Ari Parker's caramel highlights works beautifully with her casual loose waves and the neutral undertones of her complexion. Olivia Munn's delicate caramel-colored babylights give her hair just the right amount of dimension to highlight her face and skin tone. If you have thin hair, these highlights are a perfect way to make your hair reflect the light in a way that gives the illusion of thicker hair.

#16: Partial Balayage with Hints of Caramel Hue

The subtle contrast is perfect for those who want to test the waters of highlights for dark brown hair. Chestnut is one of our favorite brown hues for adding dimension to a dark brown base as it adds just the right amount of lightness and warmth. The reddish-brown shade looks beautiful when painted seamlessly throughout the hair with chestnut balayage highlights. If you liked the chocolate balayage we talked about earlier but would prefer root-to-tip dimension, look no further than chocolate foil highlights. This option will look particularly stunning on those with a warm-toned dark brown base, as well as those who have olive skin tones.

Adding caramel color to the ends of medium-length hair will give it a low-maintenance dimension. Darker roots with lighter ends make the grown-out hair soft and blended. A subtle look with glossy caramel highlights is the current trend. We appreciate the contrast of caramel balayaged onto a dark base.

Create the Caramel

J.Lo always gets it right, so it's no wonder that she absolutely nailed this ashy caramel hair color. It expertly weaves in highlighted tones to create a multidimensional effect perfect for Hollywood and beyond. Her brunette remains as classic as ever, but there's a touch of warmth that brings more life to her rich, natural hair color. If you want a bolder color contrast between the lowlights and highlights in your hair, take heed of this look created by Lee for Mandy Moore.

If you prefer soft balayage looks over more contrasted ones, this look is for you. Caramel highlights provide a younger look by adding dimension to dark hair. They are also gentle on your hair and help achieve a softer blonde tone. This will give you brightness and compliment your skin tone with warm reflections.

caramel balayage on dark brown hair

This allows you to fundamentally change your appearance without fully committing yourself to brown or blonde hair color. Caramel highlights offer a subtle way to add soft warmth, dimension, and radiance to your brown hair. Whether you choose subtle accents or bold streaks, these versatile highlights can transform your hairstyle and enhance your natural beauty. This long, wavy dark mocha brown hair with caramel highlights was created by stylist Arianna Varastehpour of California. “This is dark brown hair with some caramel blonde babylights is low-maintenance,” says hairstylist Emily Priest of Ohio. Want to embrace a blonder mane but don't want to deal with the upkeep that comes with a full head of blonde highlights?

On the flip side, if you like bolder looks, Lindsey recommends making them very bright and contrasting. Stunning on long waves, this is dark brown hair with blonde and caramel highlights. Balayage makes it appear effortless, as if you just exposed your dark brown hair color to the sun for hours.

Every brunette who dyes her hair chooses a brown-to-blonde fading style. However, you can customize this look by adding sporadic blonde highlights to the brown and caramel ombre and then framing your hair with additional blonde highlights. Speaking of well-blended highlights, here’s a set of melted burnt caramel color ones that almost fades away into this dark hair. It can be the perfect look for ladies who don’t want a very noticeable change, but rather a more sleek and subtle one.

These rich, golden tones can instantly elevate any brown hue, from dark chocolate to a lighter ashy shade. Brown highlights on dark caramel hair work well with a balayage technique. Warm caramel colors are for brunettes, particularly levels 3-6 brown tresses, to achieve a natural-looking hue.

Framing Solutions in Army Design Methodology

army design methodology

Historically, commanders (CDRs) and staff manage complex situations within an operational environment (OE) that continuously changes. Army design methodology (ADM) provides an approach to dealing with unfamiliar and complex problems. “ADM is a methodology for applying critical and creative thinking to understand, visualize, and describe problems and approaches to solving them” (Department of the Army [DA], 2019, p. 2-16). An example of a complex situation that needs a solution is Ellyatt’s (2022) report on Russian forces invading Ukraine to demilitarize the country. The situation is extraordinarily complex and requires unique solutions to alleviate the suffering of Ukrainian citizens and help keep their sovereignty.

Using the Army Design Methodology Process to Frame Problems

army design methodology

Commanders and staff members cannot frame a problem if a problem statement is too vague, narrow in definition, or contains presumed solutions. To avoid poorly framing a problem, a practical approach would include an open discussion by a commander and their staff using the problem framing tools and techniques. Questioning assumptions and brainstorming effectively identifies obstacles and frames the problem. This work addresses a void in the literature discussing the use of Design Methodology to understand contemporary conflict that often manifests as small wars. Much of the existing work on the topic focuses on various ways to employ the methodology and rarely present examples of successful use.

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

Inputs from disparate individuals vis-à-vis agencies are sought and deliberated upon, to ‘arrive’ at the most optimum decision outcome. More precisely, the military decision-making process relies on analyses, inputs and recommendations from various staff echelons, made under the overarching objective of assisting and lending clarity to the commander’s intent. The commander and staff normally work in a group/collective environment to plan, synchronise and control/ guide various small and large scale operations. The assumption underpinning the entire process is that inputs from all agencies/ individuals/are unbiased and attuned to ensure the meeting of command objectives in the best possible way. While such a rubric of decision-making model seems, and in most junctures, is, ‘fool-proof,’ with oversight mechanisms at every level, it is not without its underlying vulnerabilities and ‘pressure points’. The paper attempts to uncover a few such psychological pressure points and vulnerabilities which currently prevail in the decision making paradigm.

Framing Solutions in Army Design Methodology

This is a more strategic method of planning that appears to be a true form of art, coincidentally, it is known as Art of Design or Operational Art. According to the Department of the Army (2015), the planning team must assist the commander in understanding the operational variables, relevant actors, physical environment, and how each interacts with the other. Systems thinking is a key concept in which a series of interrelated components interact within the system.

army design methodology

“A decisive point is a geographic place, specific key event, critical factor, or function that, when acted upon, allows CDRs to gain a marked advantage over an adversary or contribute materially to achieving success” (JCS, 2020, p. IV-32). An example of a decisive point is Ukraine’s successful disruption of the Russian military’s logistics which caused the Russians to abandon their vehicles due to a lack of fuel supplies (Davydenko et al., 2022). The analysis used in identifying a COG with its critical requirements and vulnerabilities, which also helps determine a decisive point, indicates systems thinking. Collaboration and dialogue occur between more than two people or organizations and build a mutual understanding of the OE, resulting in a unity of effort.

“The SGM is key in the training and operations planning process, leveraging their experience and vast technical and tactical knowledge to advise the staff and the Operations Officer” (Department of the Army, 2020, p. 2-5). With an understanding of the ADM process, key concepts, and activities, the SGM can expertly facilitate framing a solution in an organization through working groups. For instance, the SGM works within working groups to develop solutions to organizational problems. SGM collaborating with the staff enables observation of their creative and critical thinking and may provide coaching when needed.

These ideas allowed the design team to look at many past operations in Afghanistan and develop better ways of executing them with a plan to sustain the progress and momentum. Depending on the size of the team, members potentially had as many as five specific categories that required in-depth research to understand the complexity of the subject matter. Tactical and policy-level decision-making in the armed forces and larger government institutions adheres to a collaborative paradigm.

Army Design Methodology: Operational Art in Combat

Framing the problem identifies obstacles impeding progress toward the commander’s desired end state. Framing activities help leaders frame a problem including reviewing the environmental frame, identifying problems and mapping out their relationships, and using a narrative and graphics to capture the problem frame (Department of the Army, 2015). The purpose of problem framing is to determine which obstacles are impeding the end state.

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

Soldiers and key leaders of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division are actively applying Operational Art and current Army Doctrine to assist in the planning of military operations. Since long before the initial invasion into Afghanistan Oct. 19, 2001, US troops have relied heavily upon the Military Decision Making Process for planning combat operations. While many people are comfortable with the status quo, change is inevitable and necessary, even more so in extended operations in a counterinsurgency environment.

Soldiers attending the Sergeants Major Academy (SGM-A) use practical exercises in a small group setting to help develop graphics and narratives depicting framing a problem to prepare for future positions as senior enlisted advisors. In addition to practical exercises, Soldiers attending the SGM-A receive instructions on ADM concepts such as operational art and systems thinking to help reinforce framing problems and framing activities. As the senior enlisted advisor within a financial management organization, the Financial Management SGM is responsible for coordinating and providing fiscal assets to commanders. A significant part of financial management operations revolves around managing budgetary resources within the OE, often involving data analytics (Department of the Army, 2014). A Financial Management SGM can facilitate framing the problem in an organization using regression models and predictive analysis when reviewing data.

Mind mapping begins with a single variable and ends after the planning team identifies all secondary variables and their relationships (Department of the Army, 2015). Also, mind mapping works well as a visual aid through symbols, lines, diagrams, and pictures representing relationships. While using the visual aid, planning teams can continue understanding the situation through more detailed meta-questioning and questioning assumptions. Lastly, the group uses four ways of seeing to understand how relevant actors view others, view themselves, and how actors view each other. Fortunately, as previously stated, the CSM, or SGM, acts on behalf of the commander at times to enable understanding among staff members and planners.

LTC Moore did not achieve the desired end state because the overall framing of the OE suffered. LTC Moore did not use a written narrative in framing steps and instead relied solely on verbal commands. While LTC Moore and his battalion inflicted hundreds of casualties on the NVA, the American forces also suffered heavy losses.

According to the Department of the Army (2020), “the SGM is key in the training and operations planning process, leveraging their experience and vast technical and tactical knowledge to advise the staff” (p. 2-5). With so much influence and knowledge, SGMs can facilitate framing the problem in organizations. Operations SGMs and Financial Management SGMs have the platform to facilitate the ADM process in organizations.

Moreover, collaboration encourages people to speak candidly, which is an asset in planning. Critical thinking identifies relevant facts, statistics, and details to understand a situation and enables timely decision-making (Department of the Army, 2015). American politicians relied heavily on critical thinking to determine how the OE may trend, although LTC Moore appeared more reactive than forward-thinking. The Army Design Methodology Educational Program of Instruction consists of one-week of graduate level academic instruction followed by two-weeks of intense strategic planning. In the first week, Duke Leadership gathered intelligence and information on Afghanistan from all available resources, to include recent experience, and brought them into the classroom.

Army Design Methodology: Operational Art in Combat

In addition to using ADM concepts, leaders also have a unique set of tools and techniques to help frame the problem. Leaders serving in the highest echelons of the United States Army solve complex problems consistently. The Army design methodology (ADM) process enables commanders and staff members to frame an operational environment (OE), recognize problems, and create solutions. The ADM process also promotes continuous assessment of the OE and reframes problems and solutions, ensuring leaders think critically and creatively. Through the ADM process, commanders and staff members can understand, visualize, and describe operations (Department of the Army, 2015).

Army Design Methodology: Framing the Operational Environment

CDRs and staff also check if the desired end state will remain the same, and if no new variables have come up for a need to formulate a new operational approach. This article offers a case study for application of design to a real world problem, the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery Regiment’s combat operations in the Tikrit and ad Dawr districts of Salah ad Din province, Iraq, from 2009 to 2010. In the process, we learned a number of lessons and developed a number of techniques that leaders can easily transfer to any situation that calls for a design solution.

Using the Army Design Methodology Process to Frame Problems

To solve ill-structured problems, Army leaders use ADM. To properly facilitate framing a problem in organizations, leaders must understand the problem framing activity, key ADM concepts, and tools and techniques. Framing is a key concept used in the ADM process that uses models of reality to understand, organize, and interpret situations to solve problems (Department of the Army, 2015). Moreover, visual models and narratives enhance framing activities by demonstrating the relationship between actor goals, culture, history, and other variables within the OE. The senior enlisted leader, sergeant major (SGM), or command sergeant major (CSM) assists the commander by assessing, leading, and directing the staff. Additionally, the CSM uses years of experience to assist staff members in the framing process by facilitating the understanding of the relationship between variables and how they have reacted in past scenarios (Department of the Army, 2022a).

Framing Solutions in Army Design Methodology

With that belief in mind, the 1st Cavalry Division Commander, Major General (MG) Harry Kinnard, ordered his 3rd Brigade, led by Colonel (COL) Tim Brown, to execute an air assault to prevent the NVA from crossing into Cambodia. LTC Moore and his staff attempted to understand the current OE by conducting a brief flyby of the area and reports from external cavalry units. The current state of the OE included an open landing zone for his entire battalion and an unknown number of enemies nearby.

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

The Department of the Army (2015) highlights that the desired end state defines the preferred conditions, relationships, political factors, or other circumstances within the OE. Moreover, the end state represents the overarching operational goal of higher levels of command and nests within critical strategic decisions. American commanders clearly articulated their desired end state to all levels of command in Vietnam. COL Brown issued the order to search and destroy the fleeing NVA forces to LTC Hal Moore (Builder et al., 1999). Staff members identify the future state of other actors to assist in framing the problem in the OE (Department of the Army, 2015). Additionally, knowing alternative end states help the commander and staff understand points of contention or support between others and their end state.

army design methodology

Using the Army Design Methodology Process to Frame Problems

According to the Department of the Army (2015), “brainstorming helps the team develop ideas and variables for further research and analysis” (p. 3-6). To properly frame the problem, leaders must identify obstacles, and brainstorming is a technique that facilitates the ADM framework. Brainstorming in an organization’s public area, such as a multi-purpose room, will promote a shared understanding amongst the staff framing the problem.

Army Design Methodology: Framing the Operational Environment

However, LTC Moore and his staff put little effort into understanding the current state of the OE before their assault on LZ X-RAY. When asked, Col. Ostlund highlighted the priorities he has laid out to best prepare The Duke Brigade for decisive action when in the Army's available pool of forces. Like other ADM activities, there is no recommended format for developing an operational approach. However, some activities that help the CDR and staff to frame solutions include reviewing the environmental and problem frames, formulating an operational approach, and documenting results (DA, 2015).

The Army Design Methodology: Enhancing Decision-Making in a Complex World

During practical exercises at the SGM-A, students use classroom resources to brainstorm obstacles impeding their instructor’s guidance. The overall synthesis of framing activities, key concepts, tools, techniques, the role of the senior enlisted leader, and the Ia Drang battle in Vietnam has demonstrated the importance and effectiveness of ADM through all stages of framing the OE. The lack of ADM used during the battle of Ia Drang highlights the implications of not fully understanding the OE and enemy.

Commanders cannot understand the OE without framing problems, making the ADM step an integral part of the ADM framework. To be successful in all levels of war, leaders must understand the various parts of systems and how each part is related. As a concept of ADM, “systems thinking is a process of understanding how parts of a system work and influence each other as part of a greater whole” (Department of the Army, 2015, p. 1-7). The OE is a complex system that leaders must frame to facilitate a commander’s activities. Using the example of providing security to a main supply route, leaders will use systems thinking to employ the command and control warfighting function to organize the different elements of combat power. The use of systems thinking enables leaders to integrate the elements of operational art and exercise the critical and creative thinking needed to identify obstacles under the framing the problem activity.

Many descriptions also seek to convert the methodology into a linear progression, much like traditional military planning processes. Additionally, U. S. Joint Doctrine conflates Design Methodology with the traditional operational art concept of Operational Design which hurts the ability to fully understand both important concepts. S. Marine planner present on the ground to describe the first successful use of Design Methodology in the Battles of Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. It stresses the need to employ the methodology as its originators intended; as conceptual planning meant to be an open, flowing group discussion of what is learned about the complex problem at hand. Leaders that understand framing the problem within the ADM process have an inherent responsibility to facilitate the activity in organizations. A key influencer within the Army is the Sergeant Major (SGM), who serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the commander and staff sections within an organization.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Harold Moore, the commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, initiated the framing of the OE of Ia Drang on 13 November 1965, one day before the execution of the assault. During this minimal timeframe, LTC Moore did not allow his staff to gain a clear understanding of the OE. Instead, according to Moore (1965), LTC Moore briefed his commanders and staff on the potential enemy situation and operational plan after the unit consolidated at the landing zone X-RAY (LZ X-RAY). LTC Moore should have taken every step to understand the current state of the OE before the assault. LTC Moore communicated the end state to his staff and commanders but neglected to articulate contingencies.

Using the key concepts provides a foundation for building knowledge and understanding to find solutions to any problems. The activities discussed guide formulating of operational approaches, even though there are no prescribed ways. The products documented in framing solutions are essential for developing detailed plans for CDRs and staff. Lastly, the SGM being the most experienced and knowledgeable is an excellent asset in facilitating the ADM process in his organization by providing guidance and expertise when developing the right operational approach to achieve the desired results. Ill-structured problems require the use of ADM, and framing the problem is an activity within the ADM process, which involves a unique set of activities of its own.

Graphics help stimulate understanding and organize information that shows the relationships between variables better than just through a narrative. He said, "Design is a strategic thinking construct that enables leaders to conduct the necessary Intellectual Preparation of the Battlefield in a manner that informs Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield activities." According to Britannica (2020), at the national strategic level, American leaders were concerned that communism in Vietnam would cause a domino effect and spread to neighboring countries. According to Builder et al. (1999), LTC Moore knew that enemy forces were slipping toward the border of Cambodia. Under the circumstances, he and his staff anticipated that the enemy would continue across the border and regroup for another attack. The Americans understood the relationship between the NVA and other Vietnamese citizens and wanted to prevent the rise of communism under any circumstance.

He is married to Victoria Fonseca, and they have four children, one son-in-law, and two grandchildren. He has served inevery leadership position, from Section Chief to Noncommissioned Officer Academy DeputyCommandant. He currently attends the Sergeants Major Course at the US ArmyNoncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence. On the macro scale of actors, Vietnam has a history of foreign rulers, from China's imperial rule to France's colonial rule. After World War II (WW2), Americans decided to intervene in Vietnam after the attack on a U.S.

Following the activities within the ADM process allows commanders and staff members the ability to frame an OE properly. To facilitate framing a problem in organizations, leaders must understand what framing the problem entails as an activity, including understanding key ADM concepts, and tools and techniques. Using the ADM concepts of operational art and systems thinking assists leaders with framing ill-structured problems. Brainstorming and questioning assumptions as a staff are critical problem framing tools and techniques needed to identify obstacles impeding the desired end state. Operations and Financial Management SGMs can facilitate framing the problem in organizations by brainstorming obstacles in preparation for an FTX and using data analytics to create and narrate visual models.

A guide to Arctic travel

As a result of Marchesseau's search for leads, our journey to the North Pole isn't a straight line north from Svalbard — the most direct route as the bird flies. Instead, we head northeastward from the archipelago, cutting at an angle through an area of the ice cap where satellite images show more openings. In recent decades, expedition travel companies have periodically chartered space on some of Russia's working icebreakers to take adventure-minded travelers to the top of the world. Born from a passion for exploring remote places and a wealth of knowledge about luxury expedition cruising, we are here to help you plan your perfect expedition.

En route visit to Franz Josef Land

Despite all the modern equipment on the bridge of Le Commandant Charcot, Marchesseau tells me that he and his officers still read the clouds ahead to find the best path forward through the ice. They would also look for "ice blink" — a glow on the horizon caused by the reflection of snow-topped ice on the clouds. But from my perch in the ship's elegant observation lounge, five decks above, all I can see is the white of the snow all around. The Arctic summer is characterised by relatively milder temperatures compared to the harsh winters in the region.

If reaching the North Pole is your ultimate goal, your best chances are with us! More than 5,000 travelers have attained 90° north latitude with Poseidon Expeditions aboard the icebreaker 50 Years of Victory. All 45 attempts to reach the Pole to date have been successful. Together, the visits to Svalbard and Greenland offer an ice experience different from our days weaving through the north polar ice cap. Travelling by luxury icebreaker ship from Longyearbyen is the favorite route for guests visiting the North Pole. The sea ice begins at the North of Svalbard and extends to the North Pole.

Ideal Season

Gather your friends and family for a sweet celebration on the water. Four daily cruise times are available between November 23 - January 2nd in 2024. Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered. A. Boarding for our Journey to The North Pole and holiday lights cruises take place inside the Resort Plaza Shops. Franz Josef Land

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises. Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland. It was specifically built to pilot cargo and scientific ships to places that are extremely challenging to reach. Despite its workhorse profile, this vessel is equipped with all the features you’ll need to make the most of your North Pole expedition. It’s the world’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker used for passenger travel to the North Pole, and it’ll be your comfortable expedition ship exploring the High Arctic, capable of breaking through ice up to three meters thick.

These are truly remote areas, so it's not surprising that Arctic trips to the North Pole tend to attract seasoned travelers looking to tick off one more spot on their bucket list. The expansive region takes in northern parts of Norway and the Svalbard archipelago, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Iceland and Canada. The largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, its name meaning “pointed mountains” in German, Spitsbergen is the last piece of land before the Arctic ice floe. Aboard your ship, you will sail along the extremely spectacular coastline of this icy land.

In other words, it's the first vessel designed for the comfort of tourists that offers such trips. But even today, a ship-based trip to the North Pole is a rare occurrence — particularly in cases where paying passengers are involved. We've got 267 tours going to Arctic / North Pole, starting from just 3 days in length, and the longest tour is 96 days.

Russian icebreaker North Pole expedition ships depart from the port of Murmansk. From Murmansk, ships sail north out of Kola Bay about 1,400 miles to the North Pole. Cruises from Murmansk stop in Franz Josef Land in search of polar bears and arctic wildlife. Cruises aboard Russian ships are currently on hold, but in the past averaged 13 to 14 days. Cruises to the North Pole also operate from Svalbard, Norway, over an average of 17 days. The geographic North Pole lies only 500 miles north of Spitsbergen, the largest island in Svalbard.

You'll surely take a lot of photos, because a North Pole adventure is an experience that’s difficult to put into words. As you head north, pause in Franz Josef Land Archipelago, where cliffs with thousands of nesting seabirds present a photographer’s dream, as do the polar bears hunting on the ice. We carefully navigate the icebreaker to precisely 90 degrees north for our champagne toast of this momentous accomplishment. We ceremoniously drop the anchor on a sturdy stretch of ice and disembark onto the frozen sea. Floating over the top of the world in silence is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The ability to stand at the very top of the world lures travelers to the North Pole, which is considered by many as “terra incognita,” the unknown land.

The Arctic is an otherworldly land of boundless vistas, perpetual daylight in summer, glistening ice floes and abundant wildlife. No wonder that taking a North Pole cruise is becoming a growth industry in once rarely visited realms. All our polar trips are offered at the exact same price as the ship or tour operator, including any incentives or specials. There will never be a price difference and you won’t pay more when travelling with us. What you will get however, is unbiased advice on the best voyage for you and unparalleled access to over 1,000 polar experiences.

Please follow the safety instructions and guidelines from the expedition team and ship’s crew. The expedition team, captain, and crew are highly -trained in Arctic navigation and safety procedures. The expedition team and captain will adapt the schedule to maximize your chances of safely reaching the North Pole and offer the best possible experience. During your cruise, you will encounter various types of ice, including pack ice and icebergs.
